Hocus Pocus 2?!?!?

Every Halloween there is always those same old movies you have to watch, Hocus Pocus being a big favorite for a lot of people. We have all thought about remakes of classic Halloween movies, but what if it actually happened; if Dani and Max went trick or treating again, even if the Sanderson Sisters came back just one more time. After more than 20 years, Hocus Pocus 2 is in production as confirmed by Disney. The rumor is in no way based on any truth, the original cast would not all be returning, although some of the members would return to create another witch movie; just not Hocus Pocus. According to Kim LaCapria, a writer on Snopes, Disney is in early development with Tina Fey on a supernatural-themed feature, but a knowledgeable source tells me it’s not the Hocus Pocus sequel that’s being wrongly buzzed about all over town. The origin of the rumor began in August 2015, when a Facebook page shared a movie poster image that Hocus Pocus 2 was in the works.

The making of Hocus Pocus 2 can be classified as a Wish Rumor. Such rumors express the wishes and hopes of those among they circulate (Knapp 496). “Wishful thinking” as Knapp calls it, everyone hopes and wishes the rumor was true, although most people know it isn’t. In my opinion, the rumor doesn’t really touch on death, disaster, plots, or racial tensions. Within the movie it focuses on some of those things. The rumor may have a conspiratorial plot, meaning if the rumor comes about it may lead to the creation of the next movie, or even suggest that the Hocus Pocus fans would love to see the next version sometime in the future.

No successful rumor may exceed a length or complexity greater than the memory span of the group through which it passes. Typically, the successful rumor is short, simple, and salient (Knapp 497).  When you think of a rumor you usually think of something short and sweet, if you’re someone spreading the rumor you need something quick and easy. After reading this rumor, that’s exactly what you get. Hocus Pocus 2 is in production, but really, it’s not. Each of the actors are actively making new movies, just not the one everyone is wanting. The first quality that Knapp talks about is the main one this rumor fits into. When you hear a rumor, you never know what to think. The majority of the time most people are going to go to someone else and talk to them about that information they heard. DiFonzo calls it “sense making”, you should talk to someone else for it to actually make sense to you. People have to figure out what to believe and how to make sense of the whole rumor. Most rumors now days pull you in, they get you asking questions, doing research, and talking to people you know; they get you to make sense of it all before you find out its all fabricated.

  6. Social Media has a way of getting our hopes up for something until we realize it's not true. Many times something out of date has been shared or, as mentioned in the post, it may just be wishful thinking.
